At Archbishop Spalding High School, with over 350 computers, students and teachers are never far from the benefits of technology for teaching and learning.
The network
Spalding's local area network extends to every classroom and office in the school. The network is wireless in most parts of the building. Students, teachers, administrators, and support staff are able to store their work on servers that can be accessed from anywhere in the building. E-mail is available to faculty and staff.
Technology and the administration
To ensure smooth operation, technology is employed extensively in the day to day administrative tasks such as scheduling, student records, grade reporting, attendance, and preparing school publications.
Portable laptop computer labs
Spalding teachers are using three portable computer labs that can be wheeled into the classrooms allowing each student his/her own computer for productivity and research. The portable labs each contain 30 laptop computers and a laser printer. These computers are connected wirelessly to the school's network and the World Wide Web.
The Computer Science Labs
Spalding students learn to use Microsoft Office in Computer Applications I and II. Students interested in programming can also choose Basic programming, Visual Basic and C++, and AP Computer Science (Java). There is also a class in Web page design.
The LMC has more than 20 computers connected to the World Wide Web and over 20 educational databases that our students access for research. Our Library Media Specialist trains Spalding students to use the latest technology for research and to evaluate the content of Web sites for educational value and credibility.
Students and Technology
Our students also use computers for:
- SAT practice
- Practice for English Advanced Placement
- Exploring careers and colleges
- Computer Aided Design (CAD)
- Numerous subject-specific programs
Students in the Aquinas Program use SkillsBank. This is a networked, self-paced program that allows students to use a computer to learn skills individually. The sequence of lessons can be determined by the teacher or by the SkillsBank program.
Teacher Laptop computers
The entire faculty has been issued laptop computers. These laptop computers can connect wirelessly to the school's network and the World Wide Web. Teachers can create lessons and presentations for the students and display them on monitors or LCD projectors. The laptops facilitate the use of e-mail within Spalding and between teachers and the homes of our students.
The laptops also give the teachers ready access to the World Wide Web, the limitless educational resource.
The Web and Spalding
The World Wide Web, an infinite source of educational resources, has impacted education more than any other new technology. The Spalding faculty has been quick to use the Web for its professional and instructional assets. We have even developed Web based instructional units that explore the Holy Land, the Holocaust, Shakespeare, and Social Justice.
